HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi)

What is the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi)?

The HSK is the standardised test of Chinese language proficiency. It was prepared under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and consists of a written and an oral test, with different levels. Just like the TOEFL that inspired it, the test hopes to become in the future the international reference for Chinese language proficiency. Its validity is 2 years.

What is its purpose?

– A reference test to assess one’s knowledge of the Chinese language while learning.

– A competitive asset on the labour market: passing the HSK gives the candidate a comparative advantage to find a job in the area of international exchanges.

– An open door for a longer experience in China: passing the HSK is a prerequisite to receiving a scholarship from the Hanban or to participating in a summer camp.

– A necessity to study abroad: according to the regulation of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, foreign students must pass the level 4 of the HSK, with a minimum score of 180, to be admitted for a bachelor’s degree in a Chinese university.

Who can take the test?

The test is open to students, their parents and the LFS staff.

What is the oral test of the HSK?

The HSK consists of two tests, independent from each other, one written, one oral. The written part Listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing has 6 levels: HSK 1, HSK 2, HSK 3, HSK 4, HSK 5 and HSK 6. The oral part Speaking is divided into HSK Beginner, HSK Intermediate and HSK Advanced. It is possible to take tests of different levels on the same day, depending on the times of the tests and of the levels tested by the test centre. It is also possible to take a test for a level even if the lower levels still have not been validated. The LFS only organises the written tests.
